Skin After 40: Why It Feels Different and What Actually Helps
Share

Something that I constantly hear from my clients that are 40+ is, "My skin has completely changed, and I don't know why." Maybe products that always worked for you suddenly don't seem as effective. Your skin feels drier than it used to, your complexion looks dull, or fine lines seem to appear overnight.
If any of that sounds familiar, I promise you that you are not alone.
The truth is that our skin naturally changes as we get older. The products and routines that worked in our 20s and 30s don't always give us the same results in our 40s and beyond, and that's completely normal.
One reason for this is that collagen production gradually slows over time - usually beginning in our mid-20s, with levels declining by about 1% per year and becoming more noticeable after 40. Collagen helps support the skin's structure, so as those levels decline, it's common to notice changes in firmness and elasticity. At the same time, cell turnover begins to slow, which means fresh skin cells aren't replacing older ones as quickly as they once were. That slower renewal process can leave skin looking dull or uneven, even when you're taking good care of it.
Moisture is another big change. Many women find that their skin suddenly feels drier than it used to. Hormonal changes can affect the skin's ability to retain moisture and produce natural oils, so those same products may not feel as moisturizing or hydrating as they used to.
I've found that this is often the point when people start looking for solutions by adding more products and constantly switching things around in their routines. Another serum. Another exfoliating treatment. Another ingredient that's trending on social media.
But more isn't always better.
In fact, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years as an esthetician is that consistency matters way more than complexity. I probably sound like a broken record at this point because I say it to my clients all the time - and yes, I’m pretty sure some of them are tired of hearing it! But it’s true. A simple routine with a few well-formulated products, used regularly, will almost always give you better results than a bathroom shelf full of things you’re only using once in a while.
Supporting your skin after 40 doesn't have to mean completely reinventing your routine. Sometimes it simply means making a few simple adjustments by focusing on hydration, daily sun protection, antioxidant support, and ingredients that encourage healthy skin renewal.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions about aging skin is that it suddenly needs to be corrected or fixed. I don't see it that way at all! The goal isn't to turn back the clock. It's to support your skin through those changes so it can continue to look healthy, vibrant, and resilient.
And honestly, that's a much more realistic and sustainable approach to skincare—one that allows you to glow naturally and age beautifully, which is really at the heart of my philosophy: supporting healthy skin that looks and feels its best at every age.
Where to Start
If your skin feels different than it used to, I would start with the basics: Hydrating Cream Cleanser, Hydrate Serum, Moisture Restore or Silk Light Moisture depending on your skin type, and Daily Replenish SPF every morning. If you want to add active support, Radiance Serum is a beautiful morning option and Revitalize or Timeless Renewal can be added at night based on your goals.
